Premium Wood
Every piece of furniture featured in our showroom can be manufactured in any of the following premium wood:
It is solely your preferred choice.
Purple Sandal Wood – Also known as Zi-Tan Mu (紫檀木).
Zi-Tan Mu is an extremely hard rosewood. This type of wood is just so hard and dense that it sinks in water. It is commonly found in America, Africa, India, Vietnam and Burma. It is said that it is very difficult for it to grow bigger than for a diameter of 7 inches. That is why it is very difficult to get big trunks from this tree. It has a tree trunk of yellow color. But with enough exposure in the air, the yellow will change to dark red. It gives off fragrant smell and it is one of China's medicinal herbs. With a chair made of Zitan, people will receive good medicinal treatment by sitting on it.
"Zi" means purple. "Tan" means Sandal wood. This is the most expensive wood in the world. It is so dense that it's the only kind of wood that sinks in water rather than float. In ancient Chinese literature, it was recorded that Zi-Tan and Huang Hua Li were worth as much as and as expensive as gold. It is the most prized and expensive wood used in Ming and Ching furniture. Few Ming Dynasty Zitan wood furniture pieces exist outside of museums & famed collections
Huang Hua Li (黄花梨)
Huang Hua Li Mu was often used in both the Ming and Ching dynasties. Huang Hua Li Mu is one of the world's most precious woods. It can reach up to 36 meters tall with a diameter of 1 meter. This wood is commonly found in Thailand, Burma and Vietnam. In ancient China, Huang Hua Li Mu and Zi-Tan were as precious and costly as gold and gem.
Ebony – Also known as Tan Mu (檀木)
Ebony is a tree in the genus Diospyros, nativeEbony is a tree in the genus Diospyros, native to southern India and Sri Lanka. It is noted for its heavy black, fine-grained heartwood. It is a medium-sized evergreen, reaching 20–25 m tall. This slow growing tree is native to dry and intermediate zones.
Ebony heartwood is one of the most intensely black woods known, which, combined with its very high density (it is one of the very few woods that sink in water), fine texture, and ability to polish very smoothly, has made it very valuable as an ornamental wood.
Ebony has a long history of use, fine cabinets for the luxury trade were made of ebony at the end of the 18th century. The dense hardness lent itself to refined moldings framing finely detailed pictorial panels with carving in very low bas-relief, usually of allegorical subjects, or scenes taken from classical or Christian history.
In Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka, the tree is called Karmara in the native Tulu language. Ebony tree forests which once covered large areas of these districts have shrunk significantly due to rapid urbanization. The wood of ebony is used as firewood, as it can burn even in moist conditions. As a result of unsustainable harvesting, many species of ebony are now considered threatened. Ebony is now also a common name in Africa and several parts of northern Europe and America.
Our furniture collection is made from the finest plantation grown ebony and professionally handcrafted using the Traditional Construction Technique.
Blackwood – Also known as Suan Zhi Mu ( 酸枝木)
Blackwood is an extraordinarily beautiful timber that is highly regarded by fine cabinet makers. The botanical term for a blackwood tree is acacia melanoxylon. It has quite distinctive colours, ranging from reds and browns, orange and salmon pink, through to a deep chocolate colour.
Blackwood is of the humble Wattle family of timber, and is found mainly in Tasmania and the wetter parts of Victoria. This largest of the wattles can grow to almost 30 metres in height and yields a dark brown timber with blackish streaks which is prized for cabinet making. If planted in the open it has a spreading bushy crown and a short thick trunk. The leaves are a dark, dull green and the profuse balls of pale, yellow flowers appear in spring. It is quick growing and self seeds readily.
Due to increasing popularity and greater demand the supply of Blackwood is limited.
Our furniture collection are made from the finest plantation grown blackwood and professionally handcrafted using the Traditional Construction Techinque.
Phoenix Tai or Chicken Wing Wood – Also known as Ji-Chi Mu (鸡翅木).
Ji-Chi mu is a kind of very hard wood. It is often found in Burma, Thailand, India and Vietnam. This type of wood is of even more rarity than both Huang Hua Li and Zi-Tan. Its name came into being due to its feather-like pattern which resembles that of birds. This name came from its tight and feather-like grain resembling the iridescent quality of lights and shadows on some chicken or pheasant's feathers. It is an expensive wood often used for Ching Palace furniture. There are few examples of Ming Dynasty furniture made with Ji-Chi Mu that exist. Old furmiture made with Ji-Chi Mu ranks with furniture made with Zi-Tan or Huang Hua Li Mu.
Rosewood – Also known as Hua Li Mu (花梨木).
Rosewood is one of the most important timber trees in Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Brazil and India. It is the most prized wood and commands the highest prices for the household furniture since ancient time.
Rosewood is very hard, dense wood with a very fine closed grain. It is the most favored of materials for the construction of high-grade furniture today. Rosewood has an undisputed reputation for durability, strength and stability along with simply being one of the most beautiful of all woods. It has smooth surface, cold to the touch, very heavy and very durable. It possesses a slight aromatic scent or delicate rose-like odor. It has various depths of color which ranges from honey yellow to orange to reddish-brown, and from dark red to rich red. Rosewood has beautiful grain, which sometimes forms abstract patterns that look like the veining on marble or burl wood. Rosewood ages up to 200 years before it is cut and made into furniture. It is now under strict government regulations to cultivate the rosewood tree to ensure reforestation. Our furniture collection are made from the finest plantation grown rosewood and professionally handicrafted using the Traditional Construction Technique.
Unlike most of the dark heavy rosewood, it has a pleasant lighter yellow hue and is probably the least expensive rosewood. It is also a wood often confused for Huang Hua Li wood by amateurs.
